Gastric Sleeve Surgery in Asheville, North Carolina

Gastric sleeve offers the Asheville area consistent, long-term weight loss.

Don’t be discouraged if you’ve tried every diet out there and yet still struggle with obesity. For most people, it’s a genetic problem that doesn’t go away, even if you lose weight. At Surgical Specialists of Carolina, we offer surgical interventions such as the gastric sleeve procedure (also known as sleeve gastrectomy) to help you win the fight against obesity. Living a better, healthier life is possible, and with our support you can finally improve your health, self-esteem and well-being.

A simple minimally invasive procedure that saves lives.

Unlike gastric bypass, which involves rerouting the small intestine to decrease nutrient absorption, gastric sleeve only reduces the size of your stomach. First, Dr. Jerimiah Mason will make a few tiny incisions to insert a laparoscope and his precise surgical instruments. Then, using a stomach stapling device, he will separate the majority of the stomach and remove it. What’s left is a small, banana-sized pouch that will serve as your new stomach. What makes this procedure particularly effective is the removal of the upper portion of the stomach, which sends most of the “hunger hormones” to the brain.

Dr. Mason has helped hundreds of people by performing the gastric sleeve procedure.

As one of the only weight-loss (bariatric) surgeons operating in Hendersonville, Dr. Mason is assisting in the fight against the growing obesity problem in North Carolina, where two-thirds of all adults are overweight or obese. Minimally-invasive bariatric surgery offers relief in numerous ways:

  • 55 lbs. average weight loss
  • Resolution and decreased risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and other diseases
  • 89% reduction in risk of death over a 5-year period
  • Significantly reduced pain, less scarring, decreased infection risk and shorter hospital stays compared to open bariatric procedures

Is gastric sleeve similar to LAP-BAND®?

Although both procedures work by decreasing the size of the stomach to reduce the amount of food you can eat at one time, gastric sleeve is far more effective and has fewer complications. For these reasons, we don’t perform the LAP-BAND procedure, and we don’t recommend it to our patients.
